Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern...
– Mary Schmich, yesterday’s Pulitzer-winning Chicago Tribune columnist, in a 1997 column.
Edit: Yes, this is the notoriously misattributed “Kurt Vonnegut commencement speech.” (via bluepeets)

(FYI, you can totally say, ‘Hey you can’t hurt me this way, I care!’ and the bodies still fall where they may.) (Also, it’s best to not hang around people who mal aimé(e) you.)
My first second quarter resolution is to stop talking so much shit. My second second quarter resolution is to continue referring to three-month intervals as quarters, then abbreviate them to Q1, Q2, etc. I’m being an asshole, but a different type of asshole than I usually am, very well so far. What’s your Q2 resolution?

Things I learned last night
— He spelled ‘you’re’ y-o-u-r, though to be honest, that was not the thing that I cared about. — Was it a ‘convenience your’? — Yes! I think it was that.
— My cousin told me that one part of an OB/GYN’s job is to smell vaginas during checkups. Like (makes wafting motion), oooh smells like yeast infection.
— I had to get rid of my...

stfuconfederates:
These are some things that I have discovered or have been informed of over the last few months on this blog, and I wanted to pass them on in one place. I hope they can help you in the ways they’ve helped me, and I thank the people who’ve patiently helped me to understand…

Race and the newsroom
From ‘For Trayvon Martin’s case, a long route to national attention’ (NYT):
Notably, many of the national media figures who initially devoted time to the shooting are black, which to some is a case study in the need for diversity in newsrooms. The racial and ethnic makeup of newsrooms, where minorities tend to be underrepresented, has long been a source of tension for the news...
I’ve been trying to distill certain ideas for a month or so now but am in no way close to describing the extent to which inchoate beliefs are being made resoundingly concrete. The closest précis I’ve come to, the most common thought passing through my brain these days: ‘Ugh. Fuck this shit.’ Which is not a thing, not a real thing to clutch and swear by. The reconsideration...

Breaking: Journalists have yet to adjust brain,...
producermatthew:
So we’re all just going to ignore the fact that Jeremy Lin used the word “Chink” in his Xanga username in 2004, right?
Just wanted to be clear, since, you know, we’re firing ESPN headline writers for being insensitive and criticizing ESPN anchors for using the word during play-by-play.
At what point do we draw the line between “acceptable use” and...

Three outstanding essays on Jeremy Lin
Jay Caspian Kang: Jeremy and Jin
Somewhere in the endless comparisons, odd personal anecdotes about meeting the man, and obsessive odes to Lin’s musculature, these fans have placed an implicit caveat onto his story: if he makes it to the league and plays a White game, this will all be for nothing.
Jay Caspian Kang: Trailblazin’
There is no narrative for an Asian American kid who led...

Q. Is there ever enough Prosecco to relax at the...
A. No.
Discussed: Not allowing dogs to put their paws on you, Cesar Milan, moving, IKEA trips and tricks, law school finals, the goodness of IPA, Korean nationals calling each other ‘emo gays’ in a direct transliteration of English, moving back home with your parents and the subsequent emotional toll, the anxiety of the corporeal body as experienced and transcended in the writing of Vonnegut...
Free terrible ideas
ronhaverford.tumblr.com: Like tomhaverfoods.com but based on the Swanson philosophy. “Commuter bikes? I call them pinko wheels.”
#ragefacechallenge: Like asianposes.com, a photo collage challenge of people doing their best IRL rage faces.
Art project: A series of photorealistic paintings of shitty photos with red-eye, poor composition, and etc.
